Tamoxifen Benefits Continue Long after Treatment Ends

MedPage-- Crystal Phend, Senior Staff Writer for MedPage Today reported that taking tamoxifen for about 5 years resulted in an annual reduction mortality for 15 years after treatment began. The Early Breast Cancer Trialists' Collaborative Group conducted a pooled study of 20 randomized trails. The meta analysis indicated no significant excess risk of uterine cancer or fatal pulmonary embolism risk with tamoxifen in women under age 55.

US Crime Rates Fell Despite Economy

New York Times-- Both violent crime and property crime dipped last year, the third year in a row of decreasing overall crime rates in the US. Big cities saw the biggest drop in property crimes. Violent crime dropped 5.5% overall, with robbery plunging 8.1%.

Worldwide gains in childhood mortality, but US lags

MedPage-- The number of deaths among children younger than five is projected to drop below eight million for the first time this year, but the decline in the US is lower than the advances in developing nations.

158 dead in India plane crash

CNN-- Only eight people survived the crash of an Air India Boeing 737 arriving in Mangalore from Dubai. The weather was good and the crew had reported no problems. The US's National Transportation Safety Board will be assisting in investigating the cause of the crash.

Heart attack survivors 'fear sex'

BBC News-- American researchers report that survivors of heart attacks are very likely to fear having sex, and avoid it. However, those whose doctors talked to them about sex are more likely to feel comfortable resuming sexual activity.
